WASHINGTON: A Canadian expert has claimed that the US Military and the State Department were given advance tsunami warning and America’s Navy base on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean was notified but the information was not passed on to the countries that bore the brunt of the disaster. Prof. Michel Chossudovsky of the University of Ottawa asks in an analysis produced for the Venus Project why fishermen in India, Sri Lanka and Thailand were not provided with the same warnings as the US Navy and the US State Department. He wants to know why the US State Department remained mum on the existence of an impending catastrophe. With a modern communications system, why did the information not get out? By email, telephone, fax, satellite TV, he asks, as it could have saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Prof Chossudovsky writes that the US authorities had initially recorded 8.0 on the Richter scale. As confirmed by several reports, US scientists in Hawaii, had advanced knowledge regarding an impending catastrophe, but failed to contact their Asian counterparts. According to him, Charles McCreery of the Pacific Warning Centre in Hawaii confirmed that his team tried desperately to get in touch with his counterparts in Asia. According to McCreery, the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s centre in Honolulu, the team did its utmost to contact the countries. The team contacted the US State Department, which apparently contacted the Asian governments. The Indian government has confirmed that no such warning was received. The Director of the Hawaii Warning Centre stated that “they did not know” that the earthquake would generate a deadly tidal wave until it had hit Sri Lanka, more than one and a half hours later, at 2.30 GMT. “Not until the deadly wave hit Sri Lanka and the scientists in Honolulu saw news reports of the damage there did they recognise what was happening. Then we knew there was something moving across the Indian Ocean,” McCreery told the New York Times on 27 December. “This statement is at odds with the Timeline of the tidal wave disaster. Thailand was hit almost an hour before Sri Lanka and the news reports were already out. Surely, these reports out of Thailand were known to the scientists in Hawaii, not to mention the office of Sec. Colin Powell, well before the tidal wave reached Sri Lanka,” argues the Canadian professor. “We wanted to try to do something, but without a plan in place then, it was not an effective way to issue a warning, or to have it acted upon,” Dr. McCreery said. “There would have still been some time - not a lot of time, but some time - if there was something that could be done in Madagascar, or on the coast of Africa,” he added. The Canadian academic finds the statement “inconsistent.” The tidal wave, he argues, reached the East African coastline several hours after it reached The Maldives islands. According to news reports, Male, the capital of the Maldives was hit three hours after the earthquake, at approximately 4.00 GMT. By that time everybody around the world knew. Prof. Chossudovsky writes, “It is worth noting that the US Navy was fully aware of the deadly tidal wave, because the Navy was on the Pacific Warning Centre’s list of contacts. Moreover, America’s strategic Naval base on the island of Diego Garcia had also been notified. Although directly in the path of the tidal wave, the Diego Garcia military base reported ‘no damage’,” All that was needed was for someone to pick up the phone and call Sri Lanka, he adds. There are 26 member countries of the International Coordination Group for the Tsunami Warning System, including Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. All these countries would normally be in the address book of the PTWC, which works in close coordination with its sister organisation the ICGTWS, which has its offices in Honolulu at the headquarters of the National Weather Service Pacific Region Headquarters in downtown Honolulu. The mandate of the ICGTWS is to “assist member states in establishing national warning systems, and makes information available on current technologies for tsunami warning systems.” Australia and Indonesia were notified. The US Congress is to investigate why the US government did not notify all the Indian Ocean nations in the affected area: “Only two countries in the affected region, Indonesia and Australia, received the warning” Although Thailand belongs to the international tsunami-warning network, its west coast does not have the system’s wave sensors mounted on ocean buoys. The northern tip of the earthquake fault is located near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and tsunamis appear to have rushed eastward toward the Thai resort of Phuket. “They had no tidal gauges and they had no warning,” said Waverly Person, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Centre in Golden, Colorado, which monitors seismic activity worldwide. “There are no buoys in the Indian Ocean and that’s where this tsunami occurred Prof. Chossudovsky has framed the following three questions: First: Why were the Indian Ocean countries’ governments not informed? Two: Did US authorities monitoring seismographic data have knowledge of the earthquake prior to its actual occurrence at 00.57 GMT on the 26th of December? The question is whether there were indications of abnormal seismic activity prior to 01.00 GMT on the 26th of December. The US Geological Survey confirmed that the earthquake which triggered the tidal wave measured 9.0 on the Richter scale and was the fourth largest quake since 1900. In such cases, one would expect evidence of abnormal seismic activity before the actual occurrence of a major earthquake. Three: Why is the US military Calling the Shots on Humanitarian Relief? Why in the wake of the disaster, is the US military (rather than civilian humanitarian/aid organizations operating under UN auspices) taking a lead role? The US Pacific Command has been designated to coordinate the channeling of emergency relief? Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Rusty Blackman, commander of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force based in Okinawa, has been designated to lead the emergency relief programme. Lieutenant General Blackman was previously Chief of Staff for Coalition Forces Land Component Command, responsible for leading the Marines into Baghdad during “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” Three “Marine disaster relief assessment teams” under Blackman’s command have been sent to Thailand, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. US military aircraft are conducting observation missions. Prof. Chossudovsky writes, “In a bitter irony, part of this operation is being coordinated out of America’s Naval base in Diego Garcia, which was not struck by the tidal wave. We are not dealing with advanced information based on the Ocean sensors, but on an emergency warning transmitted in the immediate wake of the earthquake. The latter took place at 00.58 GMT on the 26th of Dec. That information was sent to The State Department and the US Navy. With modern communications, the information of an impending disaster could have been sent around the World in a matter of minutes, by email, by telephone, by fax, not to mention by live satellite Television. Coastguards, municipalities, local governments, tourist hotels, etc. could have been warned. According to Tsunami Society President Prof. Tad Murty of the University of Manitoba: 'there's no reason for a single individual to get killed in a tsunami,' since most areas had anywhere from 25 minutes to four hours before a wave hit. The pattern is unprecedented: Conway said the Lincoln carrier strike group has 12 helicopters embarked that he said could be "extremely valuable" in recovery missions. An additional 25 helicopters are aboard USS Bonhomme Richard, headed to the Bay of Bengal. Conway said the expeditionary strike group was in Guam and is forgoing port visits in Guam and Singapore and expects to arrive in the Bay of Bengal by Jan. 7. Conway said the strike group, with its seven ships, 2,100 Marines and 1,400 sailors aboard, also has four Cobra helicopters that will be instrumented in reconnaissance efforts. Because fresh water is one of the greatest needs in the region, Fargo has ordered seven ships — each capable of producing 90,000 gallons of fresh water a day — to the region. Conway said five of these ships are pre-positioned in Guam and two will come from Diego Garcia. A field hospital ship pre-positioned in Guam would also be ordered to the region, depending on findings of the disaster relief assessment teams and need, Conway said. The Richter scale is logarithmic, that is an increase of 1 magnitude unit represents a factor of ten times in amplitude. The seismic waves of a magnitude 6 earthquake are 10 times greater in amplitude than those of a magnitude 5 earthquake. However, in terms of energy release, a magnitude 6 earthquake is about 31 times greater than a magnitude 5. The intensity of an earthquake varies greatly according to distance from the earthquake, ground conditions, and other factors. A: Yes. Secret wartime experiments were conducted off the New Zealand coast to create a bomb that would trigger tidal waves, according to government files declassified in Auckland. But the tsunami bomb was never fully tested and the war ended before the project was completed. Its mastermind was Thomas Leech, an Australian professor who was the dean of engineering at Auckland University from 1940 to 1950. He set off a series of underwater explosions that caused mini tidal waves at Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland, in 1944 and 1945. Details of the research, known as Project Seal, are contained in 53- year-old documents released by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Q: Is it possible for a nuclear explosion to have triggered the Macquarie quake in some way and indirectly caused the changes that led to the Sumatra quake and the Asian tsunami? A: It is possible that a very large explosion might have triggered the first quake directly in some way or that repeated prior testing could have induced changes that led to the quake indirectly, but research on the fall-out of nuclear testing is so highly classified that little is known of the possible impact. Leech, who died in his native Australia in 1973, was the university's dean of engineering from 1940 until 1950. But the tsunami bomb, as it was known, was never fully tested and the war ended before the project was completed. Its mastermind was Thomas Leech, an Australian professor who as the dean of engineering at Auckland University from 1940 to 1950. He was seconded to the New Zealand Army during the Second World War. Details of the research, known as Project Seal, are contained in 53- year-old documents released by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The papers, stamped "Top Secret", show that America and Britain were keen for Seal to be developed in the postwar years. They even considered sending Professor Leech to Bikini Atoll to watch the US nuclear tests and see if they had any application to his work. In the end, he did not make the visit, although Dr Karl Compton, a member of the US board of assessors of nuclear tests, was sent to New Zealand to meet him. In July 1946, a letter from Washington to Wellington Defence Headquarters stated: "Dr Compton is impressed with Professor Leech's deductions on the Seal Project and is prepared to recommend to the Joint Chiefs of Staff that all technical data from the test, relevant to the Seal Project, should be made available to the New Zealand government for further study." Background-- Resource-rich Aceh suffers from prolonged violence A'an Suryana, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta (2001) The war-torn province of Aceh is known for its rich natural resources, notably oil and gas, and yet its people are among the poorest in the country. World oil and gas giant ExxonMobil Oil (aka Rockefeller) has been operating for years in Aceh, tapping oil and gas from the region. The profitable business earns the government around US$1 billion per year. Not only oil and gas, the 57,366 square kilometer Aceh, a home to four million residents, also has abundant wealth in several commodities, notably palm oil, sugar, chocolate and copra. Given the rich natural resources, the province should have been able to raise the living standard of its people. However, government data shows that 40 percent of Acehnese villages can be classified as poor. What went wrong? The popular view blames the central government for the misery that the Acehnese must shoulder. Most of the natural resource revenue goes to the central government's coffers in the past years, and only a little was sent back to Aceh. This injustice is cited as one of the main sources of the rebellion in Aceh. The armed rebellion in Aceh has been going on for decades, with the latest waged by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which has been fighting for Aceh's independence from Indonesia since 1976. GAM's campaign increased after former authoritarian president Soeharto stepped down in 1998 and his successor B.J. Habibie lifted the military operation status for Aceh. As conflicts between the Indonesian military and GAM became frequent, these did not only take lives as casualties but also degraded the life of the Acehnese in general. Trade, schooling and other activities among the people have been plagued by the conflict, preventing them from doing productive activities. The conflict even forced ExxonMobil Oil to cease operations for five months in 2001. The impact was severe as the giant company was a sole gas supplier to a number of industries in Lhokseumawe, including natural gas liquefaction company PT Arun NGL and fertilizer companies PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda and PT Aceh ASEAN Fertilizer. These companies were also forced to suspend operations. Not only the oil and gas industry, but overall economic indicators show that the conflicts have impacted terribly on the Acehnese people. The number of middle and big companies in Aceh dropped by 34.21 percent to 75 companies in 2000, from 114 companies in 1998. Likewise, the number of workers employed by these companies also went down from 15,822 in 1998 to 10,521 in 2000. The gloomy situation also occurs in the investment side. The value of approved domestic and foreign investment has continued to drop since 1998. Approved domestic investment plunged from Rp 1.3 trillion (about US$150 million) in 1998 to only Rp 1.2 billion in 2000. Approved foreign investment also slumped from US$6.2 million in 1998 to zero in 2002. Exports have dropped from $3.1 billion in 1991 ****to only $667 million in 2001.***** Government after government since Soeharto has tried to end separatism and restore normalcy in Aceh. In a bid to end separatism, then president Abdurrahman Wahid initiated peace talks with GAM and drafted the special autonomy law. The law basically gives wider autonomy for local administrations to carry out local affairs. Unlike any other parts of the country, Aceh is granted freedom to observe the Islamic Sharia law. And yet, Megawati still follows Abdurrahman's peace initiative by continuing the talks with GAM. But this agreement has once again failed to end the conflict as the government sees GAM benefiting more from the agreement by recruiting more fighters and buying more arms. The government is now preparing to launch another military operation in Aceh to end separatism (2001). Folks, it's just my opinion, but I believe that Iran was hit with an earthquake by means of HAARP, here is why: I remember reading yesterday (I believe on a link from Propaganda Matrix and LibertyThink.com) on CyberSpaceOrbit.com about HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) being turned on at the same time that the terror color alert was issued (HAARP comes on in idle Hi-power mode just after High terror alert issued). I told one of my friends that I wouldn't be surprised if we started getting hit with earthquakes, volcanoes, or some other condition that HAARP reportedly causes (HAARP Home Page - Radar Matrix - HAARP.net). I then got a phone call this morning as I was on the way back home, that Iran was hit with a massive earthquake with reported deaths at around 5,000-6,000 (Iran Quake Reportedly Kills 5,000-6,000). Once I arrived home, I began pulling articles and have found that now the number is estimated more closely to 20,000 (Thousands Feared Dead in Iran Earthquake). I began talking to my friend Eric Hufschmid about this, in which case he sent me a copy of recent massive earthquakes (Data of MAJOR Earthquakes within the past 5 days)... NOTICE HOW THERE HAVE BEEN 8 MAJOR EARTHQUAKES (7 listed on the article, 8 listed on the Govt's website) THAT HAVE BEEN OCCURRING SINCE DECEMBER 21st?! Bearden: Longitudinal waves don’t pack a great deal of mass. They interact fairly weakly but they do interact. But because they interact weakly they go great distances through mass. And the first test they used was to kill the USS Thresher atomic submarine off the east coast of the United States. What they do to engineer the weather is very simple. What you do is take a place and you create a little hot air (creating a low pressure area). Then you cool it in another area (creating a high pressure area). And by steering the hot spots and the cold spots, you can actually entrain the jet streams and steer them. So actually what you are doing is steering the weather. We haven’t had normal weather over North America since July 4th, 1976. Since you can put the things under water, instead of having a big burst by pulsing the weapons, what you do is put the beams to cross and gradually heat the water if you want to heat it or you gradually cool it if you want to cool it. So you can create an El Nino or a la Nina. You can wind up having large scale effects on the weather. If you start to create the energy inside a fault zone, for example, as the energy builds up, the rocks are piezoelectric and expand mechanically as you put more energy into them and gradually the rocks will then slip and you will have an earthquake. If you really get desperate and you need an earthquake really bad, you can pulse the energy and put it in the rock whether there’s a fault zone or not, and it will blast its way in there. Brigham Young University geology professor Ron Harris has had trouble sleeping
since the earthquake he predicted seven years ago killed an estimated 150,000
people along the rim of the Indian Ocean on Dec. 26.

Accordind to the Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) organization, these bouys are mounted to the sea floor. This fact becomes an important piece of the puzzle as we procede through an exercise in simple logic and mathmatics to determine the ocean depth at the point of the tsunami as compared to the depth of the EQ event. More importantly perhaps are the growing signs surrounding this event that rather than being caused by internal earth dynamics, as is being widely reported, it was instead caused by an extraterrestrial event, a meteorite strike into the ocean having come from the Southern Hemispheric skies. Australian researcher Professor Ted Bryant had previously warned about just such an event happening in his book, Tsunami - The Underrated Hazard. He also ‘backed up his dire warning’ with a time and a date: 8pm on February 22, 1491, when a meteorite strike caused tsunami waves in excess of 130 meters high. Further research for the Australian Spaceguard Survey by Michael Paine, and titled “Tsunami from Asteroid/Comet Impacts”, shows that an asteroid having a diameter of 2 km would be equal to 1,000,000 MT. Mr. Paine states, “When an asteroid hits the ocean at 70 000km/h there is a gigantic explosion. The asteroid and water vaporize and leave a huge crater - typically 20 times the diameter of the asteroid (that is, a 100m asteroid will create a 2 kilometre diameter crater). The water rushes back in, overshoots to create a mountain of water at the middle and this spreads out as a massive wave - a tsunami. The centre of the "crater" oscillates up and down several times and a series of waves radiate out.” Lending credence to the suspicions of a meteorite strike causing this event have been a number of world reports relating to fireballs, mysterious lights in the sky around the world and exploding meteorites turning ‘night into day’ in both Indonesia and China over these past few weeks.

(CNSNews.com) - With the world's attention focused on the earthquake/tsunami that has claimed tens of thousands of lives in at least ten countries that surround the Indian Ocean, media organizations like Reuters are pinning part of the blame for the catastrophe on "global warming." "A creeping rise in sea levels tied to global warming, pollution and damage to coral reefs may make coastlines even more vulnerable to disasters like tsunamis or storms in [the] future," wrote Alister Doyle, an environmental correspondent for Reuters, who attributed the opening paragraph of the story to "experts." However, Doyle's story did not contain any quotes directly mentioning the theory of global warming. Instead, Doyle's narrative referred to the controversial subject. "Global warming, poorly planned coastal development and other threats over which humans have some control are weakening natural defenses ranging from mangrove swamps to coral reefs that help keep the oceans at bay," Doyle wrote. Brad Smith of the environmental group Greenpeace was quoted in the Reuters story, but only as follows: "Coasts are under threat in many countries ... Development of roads, shrimp farms, ribbon development along coasts and tourism are eroding natural defenses in Asia." According to Doyle, "Scientists say a build-up of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere from human burning of fossil fuels threatens to trigger more powerful storms and raise sea levels, exposing coasts to more erosion. "Island nations like the Maldives, swamped by the tsunami, could literally disappear beneath the waves if seas rise," Doyle added in the Reuters story without using expert quotes to back up the assertion. "[I]n Bangladesh, 17 million people live less than one meter above sea level, as do many in Florida in the United States," Doyle reported. Richard Klein, a senior researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, was quoted on how poor regions of the world are more vulnerable to natural disasters. "Vulnerability has as much a social dimension as an environmental one," Klein told Reuters. Two weeks ago, at a United Nations climate change conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cybercast News Service reporter Marc Morano spoke with a former member of Greenpeace who had just urged people attending the conference to ignore the issue of global warming. "Climate change is a huge thing, but there is very little that we can do about it," Bjorn Lomborg told Morano. Lomborg, an associate professor of statistics at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, said world governments would be wise to worry less about climate change and concentrate instead on problems he considers solvable, like AIDS, poverty and inadequate sanitation.

As the international community struggles to aid victims of last month's devastating tsunami in southern Asia, scientists warn an eruption of a volcano in Spain's Canary Islands could unleash a "mega-tsunami" larger than any in recorded history. According to their controversial study, an explosion of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma could send a chunk of rock twice the size of the Isle of Wight into the Atlantic at up to 220 miles an hour. Many experts believe the risk of "mega-tsunamis" from such a massive landslide on La Palma has been hugely overstated. But in the study's scenario, energy released would equal the electricity consumption of the United States for six months, sending gigantic tidal waves across the Atlantic at the speed of a jet plane. Devastation in the United States would reach trillions of dollars with tens of millions of lives at risk. Spain, Portugal, Britain, France, Brazil, the Caribbean and West Africa would also be swamped by giant waves.

Minutes after a massive earthquake rocked the Indian Ocean on Sunday, international ocean monitors knew that a tsunami would likely follow. But they didn't know whom to tell. ?We put out a bulletin within 20 minutes, technically as fast as we could do it,? says Jeff LaDouce of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. LaDouce says e-mails were dispatched to Indonesian officials, but he doesn't know what happened to the information. The problem is that Sunday's earthquake struck the unmonitored Indian Ocean. An international system of buoys and monitoring stations - the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii - spans the Pacific, alerting nations there to any oncoming disasters. But no such system guards the Indian Ocean. (There isn't one in the Atlantic Ocean because there are comparatively few earthquakes there. LaDouce says efforts are being made in the Caribbean to set up a warning system after last year's tsunami caused by the volcanic collapse on the island of Montserrat.) ?Sumatra has an ample history of great earthquakes, which makes the lack of a tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean all the more tragic,? says geologist Brian Atwater of the U.S. Geological Survey. ?Everyone knew Sumatra was a loaded gun.? Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards. "The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told Reuters on Wednesday. "No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," he added. "I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening." At least 40 tourists, including nine Japanese, were drowned. The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday, which sent waves up to 5-metres (15-feet) high crashing onto Sri Lanka's southern, eastern and northern seaboard, flooding whole towns and villages, destroying hotels and causing widespread destruction.
